The city of Lawrenceville is a city and the county seat located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. As of 2008, the population of Gwinnett County was estimated at approximately close to 30,000 people. The 2010 census reflects that approximately 805,000 people live in Gwinnett County. Of all the counties in Georgia, Gwinnett has pretty growing pretty steadily for the past 25 years.
In terms of demographics, in 2000, Gwinnett was approximately 72% white. As of the 2010 census, Gwinnett is now majority-minority and the white population has decreased to about 49%.
Historically, Lawrenceville was incorporated in 1821 which makes it one of the oldest cities in the Metro Atlanta area. The city is named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval figure in the war of 1812. The good captain was widely known for his dying command, "Don't give up the ship!"
The Gwinnett County Courthouse is located in a new facility in Lawrenceville. The State Court is currently served by six (6) judges and the Superior court is served by eleven (11) judges. The Clerks of Court do a decent job of progressing car collision and personal injury cases through the docket which helps facilitate a settlement or place the legal action on the trial calendar. Most car accident cases are filed in either State or Superior Court. Although merely an opinion, I believe that the average jurors in the 1990s and early 2000s were somewhat conservative with regard to personal injury awards. However, as of the past five years the makeup of the average juror is changing. Most jurors are now members of a minority group and their awards in car collision and personal injury cases are rising. I believe the general verdicts coming out of Gwinnett County, Georgia support that belief.
